MacKay Bridge Closures: Traffic Alerts Ahead!

Some closures are coming to one of the harbour bridges over the next several days

Upcoming closures will affect traffic on the MacKay Bridge, one of the key structures spanning the Halifax Harbour, over the next several days. These closures are part of essential maintenance work aimed at improving safety and infrastructure integrity in the area.

According to the Halifax Harbour Bridges (HHB), the MacKay Bridge will be closed to all Dartmouth-bound traffic tonight, specifically from 8 p.m. to midnight. This closure is necessary to facilitate ongoing construction work that is critical for the safety of local commuters and the longevity of the bridge's infrastructure.

Following tonight's closure, the MacKay Bridge will also be closed to Halifax-bound traffic on the following Monday night, during the same time frame of 8 p.m. to midnight. These temporary closures are anticipated to allow crews to successfully lower the Windmill Road overpass after the bearing replacement work has been finalized, ensuring that all bridge components are functioning optimally and safely.

While the MacKay Bridge will experience these significant closures, it is important to note that the Macdonald Bridge will remain open. However, the bridge commission has reiterated that vehicles exceeding 3,200 kg are not permitted on the Macdonald, with the exception of transit buses. During the closures of the MacKay Bridge, bridge patrol personnel will be actively enforcing this weight restriction to ensure compliance and safety on the roads.

Drivers traveling in and out of Halifax and Dartmouth are advised to plan their routes accordingly and consider alternative travel options during these designated closure periods. The bridge commissions' proactive measures reflect their commitment to maintaining transport safety and ensuring that necessary repairs are completed in a timely manner.

These maintenance efforts are critical, not only for the immediate safety of users but also for maintaining the long-term viability of the region's transportation infrastructure. Residents and commuters are encouraged to stay updated on any future notices regarding bridge operations and closures.
