FREDERICTON – The New Brunswick government has announced plans to establish a consumer advocate position aimed at representing both residents and small businesses within the province's energy regulator. This decision stems from an independent review that was commissioned by the Liberal government, which focuses on addressing the significant debt challenges faced by the Crown corporation, NB Power.

The comprehensive review was conducted by three experts who underscored the necessity of a consumer advocate to enhance the representation of ratepayers during the deliberation of electricity prices by the Energy and Utilities Board. This initiative is part of a broader strategy to improve the transparency and accountability of energy pricing in New Brunswick.

Premier Susan Holt made the announcement concerning the provincial government's response to the expert review in Fredericton. During this unveiling, she emphasized the administration's commitment to ensuring that the voices of consumers are heard and that their interests are adequately protected in regulatory processes.

In addition to creating the consumer advocate role, the government has expressed willingness to explore the possibility of establishing a joint energy operator with other Maritime provinces. The Liberal government stated that it has considered all recommendations provided in the expert review and has not rejected any. However, some proposals, such as the suggestion to restructure NB Power into a public-private corporation, require further examination before any decisions are made.
