Pope Leo XIV Announces Carlo Acutis' Canonization Date

ROME (AP) — Pope Leo XIV on Friday set Sept

ROME (AP) – Pope Leo XIV has officially rescheduled the canonization of the Catholic Church's first millennial-era saint, Carlo Acutis, to September 7. The announcement was made during a consistory, a meeting involving cardinals who gathered to determine the dates for the canonization of several new saints.

Originally, Acutis's canonization was planned for April 27, but it was postponed due to the passing of Pope Francis, which occurred on April 21. This delay has since drawn significant attention to Acutis, a 15-year-old boy who lost his life to leukemia in northern Italy in 2006. His story has struck a chord with many, particularly among the youth, who have been visiting his tomb in Assisi in large numbers.

Acutis's life, although short, was filled with distinctively youthful interests like hiking, playing video games, and engaging in light-hearted activities with friends. Yet, he also dedicated time to serving his community by teaching catechism at a local parish and reaching out to the homeless. Notably, he utilized his computer skills to create an online exhibit that highlighted over 100 eucharistic miracles recognized by the Catholic Church throughout history.

His burial site in Assisi has transformed into a prominent pilgrimage destination, especially as the 2025 Holy Year approaches. The tomb features an innovative glass coffin that allows visitors to view Acutis dressed in modern attire, including sneakers, jeans, and a sweatshirt, which adds a relatable element to his image as a saint.

In addition to Acutis, Pope Leo XIV has announced that Pier Giorgio Frassati, another Italian Catholic who died young at 24 from polio, will also be canonized on the same day. The announcement marks a significant occasion for the Catholic Church, especially in bridging the historical gap between its past saints and contemporary followers, particularly the youth.
