SURIN, Thailand (AP) — Escalating tensions over border territories between Cambodia and Thailand have erupted into armed conflict, resulting in significant casualties and the displacement of tens of thousands of civilians. While both nations have accused each other of initiating the hostilities, no side has formally accepted responsibility for the initial attack on Thursday. Efforts from regional and international entities for a ceasefire have been largely unsuccessful, with no peace talks anticipated by early Sunday.
In the midst of this grim scenario, there are rays of hope, as some individuals on both sides of the border are proactively working to create safe spaces and re-establish a sense of normalcy. A temple in Thailand's northeastern province of Surin has taken proactive measures by constructing a bomb shelter, a rarity among the nation's 27,000 active Buddhist monasteries. The temple, which remains unnamed for safety reasons, is situated approximately 10 kilometers (6 miles) from the Cambodian border.
Phut Analayo, the temple's abbot, explained that construction began shortly after a brief armed clash in May flared tensions. Funded by donations, local monks and villagers built the bunker in just four to five days, using large precast concrete drainage pipes and protecting it with earthen mounds and metal sheeting. The bunker, equipped with electricity and basic cooking facilities, has become a refuge for six monks and several villagers who have chosen to stay in the area despite the danger.
Though religious activities have been suspended, the abbot remains committed to serving his community. He expressed fear but noted the importance of his presence for those relying on the temple. Alongside the human toll of the conflict, the temple's stray dogs have found care amidst the crisis, with Phut Analayo stating his responsibility to ensure their survival.
Compassion and community spirit are also evident as senior citizens from the Ballroom Dance for Health of the Elderly club in Surin mobilize resources to support those affected by the conflict. Approximately a dozen members visited a shelter housing around 1,000 evacuees, distributing essential items such as clothes and toiletries. Chadaporn Duchanee, a 62-year-old retired civil servant and dance instructor, spearheaded the initiative after learning of the struggles faced by individuals who abandoned their homes and belongings in haste.
In a similar vein, a roadside pop-up stall situated near the border between Siem Reap, Cambodia, and Oddar Meanchey province is making a significant impact by collecting donated food and essentials for evacuees and military personnel. Managed by 28-year-old youth volunteer Chhar Sin and other community members, the stall has become a lifeline for those fleeing combat zones, providing food and supplies to individuals who arrive with little more than the clothes on their backs. Local residents have flocked to the stall to donate fruits and vegetables, underscoring the sense of communal support during these trying times.
Meanwhile, in Samrong, Oddar Meanchey province, chief monk Tho Thoross stands as one of the few monks remaining in the largely evacuated Wat Prasat Samrong Thom temple. With most civilians fleeing the city amid artillery sounds, he continues to provide comfort and resources for displaced villagers passing through. Tho Thoross has seen a surge in violence compared to previous clashes, stating that the fighting is now far more widespread along the border. He advocates for both parties to collaborate in finding a peaceful resolution, emphasizing the need for a mutually beneficial solution.
As the conflict continues to impact everyday lives on both sides of the border, the resilience and compassion demonstrated by various individuals present a model of hope. The courage of volunteers and community leaders amid danger highlights the unwavering strength of the human spirit.
