"Nova Scotia Premier Ready to Retaliate Against U.S."

Nova Scotia Premier Tim Houston says he “will not hesitate” to implement retaliatory measures against the United States if they again become needed

Nova Scotia Premier Tim Houston has stated that he "will not hesitate" to implement retaliatory measures against the United States if necessary. This declaration follows U.S. President Donald Trump's decision to impose a 35 percent tariff on Canada after negotiations fell through by the August 1 deadline.

The White House has clarified that these tariffs will not impact goods that comply with the Canada-U.S.-Mexico Agreement (CUSMA). In response to the tariff situation, Prime Minister Mark Carney emphasized that Ottawa will only engage in negotiations that align with the best interests of Canadians.

Premier Houston acknowledged the difficulties faced during the negotiations, stating, "As much as we all hoped Canada could reach a trade deal with the U.S. by August 1, we knew it would be incredibly difficult. Today, we are learning that we still have more work to do." He expressed disappointment regarding the imposition of tariffs, noting that no one wanted to be in this position and that the road to resolution has been long and challenging.

Houston commended Prime Minister Carney and the federal government for their relentless efforts in addressing the trade issue and for ensuring the involvement of provincial premiers in the discussions. "Our government will continue its part to support our province and the rest of Canada," he assured.

Amidst the ongoing trade tensions, Premier Houston remains open to the possibility of retaliatory tariffs but noted that no additional measures have been announced by the federal government as of yet. He reiterated his previous criticisms of Trump's tariff threats, labeling them "foolish" and "childish." He expressed concern that such aggressive actions fail to appropriately treat a neighboring ally, asserting that Canadians have responded by avoiding U.S. products and canceling trips to the United States.

Despite the current chaos stemming from the trade war, Houston is optimistic about the sense of unity demonstrated across Canada in response to Trump's decisions. He remarked, "For now, we're focusing on what we can control, like building our economy, becoming more self-reliant, and seizing the opportunities that are before us." He emphasized the importance of diversifying to new trade markets, removing internal trade barriers, and supporting local Nova Scotian and Canadian businesses, reaffirming his commitment to prioritize the welfare of Nova Scotians.
