"Severance and The Studio Eye Early Emmy Wins"

LOS ANGELES (AP) — “Severance” and “The Studio” could bring in a boatload of early Emmys this weekend

LOS ANGELES (AP) – The upcoming Creative Arts Emmy Awards, taking place over the next two days, showcase nearly 100 trophies recognizing some of television's most talented creators and technicians. This event serves as a precursor to the Primetime Emmy Awards, which will be aired on CBS on September 14. Among the leading nominees are “Severance” and “The Studio”, both from Apple TV+, which could potentially score a significant number of awards this weekend.

This year, “Severance” stands out as the top overall nominee with a remarkable 27 nominations, aiming to secure as many as 13 wins during the Saturday ceremony, which focuses on scripted programs. Meanwhile, “The Studio,” leading the comedy categories with 23 nominations, has the potential to bring home 12 victories. The Creative Arts Emmys predominantly recognize technical and craft categories, including accolades for best sci-fi or period hairstyles and best stunt coordination for comedy.

Despite the focus on technical achievements, the ceremony often illuminates star-studded moments. Last year, “Shogun” set a new record, claiming 14 Emmys in a single season at the Creative Arts event before maintaining its momentum at the main awards. Moreover, Benj Pasek and Justin Paul made headlines as they joined the prestigious EGOT club after winning their first Emmy for a song co-written for “Only Murders in the Building.”

This weekend's guest acting categories also promise excitement, particularly with nominees from “The Studio,” which is a Hollywood satire co-created by Seth Rogen. Nominees for guest actor in a drama include renowned directors Ron Howard and Martin Scorsese, along with actors Anthony Mackie and Bryan Cranston. In the guest actress in a comedy category, Oscar winners Jamie Lee Curtis and Olivia Colman are vying for accolades for their performances in “The Bear.”

Kendrick Lamar and Beyoncé competing for their performances, while Barack Obama seeks his second Emmy in the narration category, competing against Tom Hanks and Idris Elba.

While not all big-name nominees will be present to accept their awards, many will serve as presenters, including Ron Howard, Jamie Lee Curtis, Questlove, and Maya Rudolph. The Creative Arts Emmys allow genre shows to showcase their talents, particularly in technical categories related to prosthetics and visual effects. Noteworthy series like “The Penguin” and “The Last of Us” from HBO and streaming service Max lead the nominee count this year with a staggering 142 total nominations.

“Andor,” a gritty entry into the “Star Wars” franchise, is also in contention, with 11 of its 14 categories scheduled to be announced on Saturday. This series is notable for its unique storytelling perspective in the franchise, despite being snubbed in the acting categories. It features a nomination for best character voice-over for Alan Tudyk, known for the memorable dialogue of the droid K-2SO.

Tudyk's voice-over nomination illustrates the diverse nature of the nominees at this event, putting him in competition with esteemed performers such as Julie Andrews for her work in “Bridgerton,” and Hank Azaria for “The Simpsons.” Maya Rudolph is also recognized for her voice performance in “Big Mouth.”
