BOSTON (AP) – On Sunday, former Vice President Mike Pence will be honored with the prestigious John F. Kennedy Profile in Courage Award due to his principled stand against President Donald Trump's attempts to overturn the 2020 election results. The award ceremony will take place at the JFK Library in Boston.

The JFK Library Foundation acknowledged Pence for his bravery in ensuring the constitutional transfer of presidential power on January 6, 2021. Despite immense pressure from Trump to reject certified election results from key swing states, Pence maintained that he did not possess the authority to do so. His steadfastness came at a time when a violent mob of Trump supporters stormed the Capitol, some of whom shouted threats against him, indicating a desire to “hang Mike Pence.” He was swiftly escorted away by Secret Service agents, narrowly avoiding a close encounter with the rioters.

Amidst the chaos, Trump criticized Pence via social media, stating that he lacked the courage to protect the nation and the Constitution by giving states the opportunity to certify a corrected set of facts. While many advised him to leave the Capitol for his safety, Pence chose to remain and fulfill his ceremonial duty of certifying the election results for Democrat Joe Biden’s victory once the rioters were dispersed.

Named after a book published by President John F. Kennedy in 1957, the Profile in Courage Award is bestowed upon public officials who take principled actions despite facing potential political or personal repercussions. Notable past recipients include former Presidents Barack Obama, George H.W. Bush, and Gerald Ford, all recognized for their political courage.

In a collective statement, Caroline Kennedy and Jack Schlossberg—Kennedy's daughter and grandson, who will present the award—expressed that political courage is still very much alive in the United States. They emphasized that leaders at all levels of government continue to prioritize their country over personal ambition, noting Pence's decision as an embodiment of President Kennedy’s belief that a courageous act can alter the course of history.

Pence has publicly expressed his gratitude for receiving this honor, stating that he is “deeply humbled and honored.” He has also noted that he has been inspired by President John F. Kennedy’s life and words since his youth and is proud to join the ranks of distinguished Americans recognized by this award.

Furthermore, Pence has positioned himself as one of the few Republicans willing to publicly challenge the Trump administration's policies. His political action committee, Advancing American Freedom, has actively campaigned against Robert F. Kennedy Jr.'s nomination to direct the nation’s health agencies. In his speeches, Pence has called upon the current president to remain steadfast alongside long-time foreign allies and has previously shared an article discussing presidential power's limitations, responding to Trump’s assertion that “He who saves his Country does not violate any Law.”

Through this award, Mike Pence's actions during one of the most tumultuous periods in American political history are being recognized, highlighting the themes of integrity and courage in governance.
