An extension agreement for the Yarmouth ferry service has been announced by the province to cater to the rising demand for this vital transportation link. This agreement between the province and Bay Ferries Ltd ensures that the ferry will continue operations from May to October in 2027, maintaining the route between Yarmouth, Nova Scotia, and Bar Harbor, Maine.
The decision to extend the service comes on the heels of a notable increase in ferry ridership over the past few years. Specifically, the ferry transported 44,000 passengers in 2026, marking a 10 percent increase compared to 2025. A significant portion, approximately 85 percent, of these passengers hailed from the United States. Findings from a 2026 study indicated that ferry passengers tend to extend their stays and contribute more economically compared to the average visitor, underlining the service's positive impact on tourism.
Fred Tilley, the Minister of Public Works, expressed optimism regarding the ferry's uninterrupted operation for the upcoming season. He emphasized the importance of stability for individuals and businesses that rely on this transportation service. Tilley stated, “Knowing that the Yarmouth ferry will continue to operate uninterrupted next season is a success under difficult circumstances. We know our job is not done, and we will continue to pursue options that will give the people and businesses that depend on the ferry service the certainty they deserve.” His comments reflect the provincial government's commitment to maintaining and improving the ferry service in light of increasing passenger numbers.
Furthermore, an economic impact study highlighted the significant benefits generated by the ferry service, which not only enhances revenue streams for rural communities but also stimulates economic activities for local businesses across Nova Scotia. The study showcases how the ferry service contributes to the overall economic ecosystem of the region, facilitating commerce and promoting tourism.
In addition to its economic advantages, the ferry service is aligned with the province's buy-local initiative. By endorsing local businesses, the ferry contributes to a sustainable economic framework within Nova Scotia, reinforcing the importance of supporting homegrown enterprises.
With the ferry operations expected to continue through 2027, stakeholders and community members are optimistic about the future of this transportation link. The growth in ridership and the backing from the provincial government signify a robust support system for the ferry service, which plays a crucial role in connecting Nova Scotia with neighboring regions while bolstering the local economy.
