TOKYO (AP) — Japan has taken a significant step in fortifying its defense capabilities with the arrival of its first three F-35B stealth fighter jets. These jets landed at the Nyutabaru Air Base, located in the Miyazaki prefecture of southern Japan, marking an important milestone in the country's military expansion efforts amid rising regional tensions.

The F-35B jets, known for their short take-off and vertical landing capabilities, will be primarily utilized by the Japan Air Self-Defense Force. They are intended to operate from two modified Japanese helicopter carriers, the Izumo and the Kaga, which have been specifically adapted to accommodate these advanced aircraft. The delivery of the remaining fourth jet is anticipated to occur at a later date, as confirmed by the Air Self-Defense Force.

Japan's Defense Ministry has outlined plans for the acquisition of a total of 42 F-35Bs and an additional 105 conventional take-off and landing (CTOL) F-35As, positioning Japan as the largest user of the F-35 outside the United States. This military buildup is perceived as a response to perceived threats from China, prompting Japan to accelerate its defense enhancements, particularly in remote islands located in the southwestern region of the country.

In alignment with its defense strategy, Japan is currently constructing a new air base on the island of Mageshima. This base, which is situated approximately 160 kilometers (100 miles) south of Nyutabaru, includes plans for a runway dedicated to F-35B flight exercises. However, due to construction delays, drills will continue to occur at the Nyutabaru base until around 2030. This situation has raised concerns among local residents, leading to protests about the anticipated noise from aircraft operations.

As tensions in the Asia-Pacific region escalate, Japan's advancements in military capabilities, highlighted by the arrival of the F-35B jets, underscore the nation's commitment to enhancing its defensive posture. The deployment of these modern aircraft and associated infrastructure reflects Japan’s strategic pivot toward greater military readiness in an increasingly volatile environment, particularly in light of the activities of neighboring nations.
