Officer Fires at Vehicle During Erratic Driving Incident

Regional police says one of its officers was nearly struck by a vehicle last night and used their firearm during the incident

Regional police reported that an officer was nearly hit by a vehicle during an incident that occurred last night. The situation escalated when the officer discharged their firearm after a vehicle, initially pulled over for erratic driving, accelerated towards them. The incident took place around 7 p.m. on Main Avenue in Fairview, where two officers were outside their patrol vehicle.

According to the Halifax Regional Police (HRP), the officers had attempted to stop the vehicle due to its erratic driving. However, as they approached, the driver suddenly accelerated, aiming towards one of the officers. In response to the imminent threat, the officer drew their firearm and fired twice at the side of the vehicle. Following the gunfire, the suspect fled the scene. Fortunately, neither of the officers involved in the incident sustained any injuries. HRP has stated that it remains unclear whether anyone inside the vehicle was hurt as a result of the shooting.

Shortly after the incident, police mistakenly apprehended four individuals near Joseph Howe Drive, believing them to be connected to the erratic driving event. However, upon further investigation, law enforcement determined that these individuals were not involved in the incident, leading to their release.

Authorities are actively searching for the vehicle believed to be involved in this dangerous encounter. The vehicle is described as a black Nissan Sentra featuring tinted rear windows. Additionally, the suspect driver is described as a white or light-skinned black male with black hair and a beard, prompting police to urge anyone with information regarding the vehicle or its driver to come forward.

The Serious Incident Response Team, the province's police watchdog, has been assigned to conduct an investigation into the officer's use of firearm during the incident. This team is responsible for looking into incidents involving police officers that result in serious injury or death, ensuring a thorough and independent review of the circumstances surrounding the shooting.

This incident has raised concerns about police interactions with the public, particularly regarding the use of force and the protocols in place during traffic stops. As investigations continue, the HRP is likely to face scrutiny over their strategies in handling potentially dangerous situations and ensuring the safety of both officers and the community.

As the investigation unfolds, further details about the incident are expected to emerge. The community is being encouraged to remain vigilant and report any sightings or information related to the suspect vehicle or driver in an effort to bring clarity to this unsettling situation.
