LONDON (AP) – A British couple, Peter and Barbie Reynolds, aged 80 and 76, respectively, who had been detained in Afghanistan for over seven months under undisclosed charges, safely returned to the United Kingdom on Saturday following their release by the Taliban. They were released on Friday and arrived at Heathrow Airport, where they were seen smiling and appearing to be in good health.
The Reynolds had spent 18 years living in Afghanistan, where they operated an education and training organization in Bamiyan province. They made the decision to remain in the country even after the Taliban regained control in 2021. Their detainment began in February when they were arrested while traveling to their home in Bamiyan. Throughout their nearly eight months in custody, they were confined in a maximum-security prison and experienced long periods of separation from one another.
The couple's situation highlights ongoing international concerns regarding the Taliban's conduct since their takeover of the Afghan government in 2021. Analysts suggest that the Taliban's decision to release the Reynolds might be part of a larger strategy aimed at securing international recognition for their regime. Since the U.S. withdrawal and the subsequent collapse of the U.S.-backed government, international aid to Afghanistan has sharply declined, despite the rising humanitarian needs among its population.
