MOORESVILLE, N.C. (AP) Michael Annett, a former racecar driver known for his significant contributions to NASCAR, has passed away at the age of 39. The announcement of his death was made by JR Motorsports, one of the teams he raced with, via social media on Friday. The cause of his death has yet to be disclosed.
JR Motorsports expressed their condolences, stating, "Our thoughts and prayers are with the entire Annett family with the passing of our friend Michael Annett." The statement highlighted Annett's key role in the team from 2017 until his retirement in 2021, emphasizing his contributions to establishing the four-car organization that remains in operation today.
Throughout his career, Annett made a total of 436 combined starts across NASCAR's three national touring series. He is well-remembered for his impressive performance in the Xfinity Series, where he completed 321 starts. Notably, he achieved 158 of those starts while competing for JR Motorsports.
One of the highlights of Annett's career occurred in 2019 when he claimed victory in the season-opening race at Daytona International Speedway, driving the No. 1 JR Motorsports Chevrolet. This win marked his only triumph at the national level, a significant milestone in his racing career.
A native of Des Moines, Iowa, Annett also had success in the ARCA Menards Series, where he secured two victories. His wins came at Talladega Superspeedway in 2007 and the series opener at Daytona in 2008, showcasing his talent on the racetrack early in his career.
