KYIV, Ukraine (AP) — In a distressing overnight assault, at least 10 individuals, including a child, suffered injuries as Russia executed a large-scale missile and drone attack on Kyiv early Saturday, as reported by Ukraine's State Emergency Service. This sudden attack resulted in multiple explosions and significant fires across various districts of the capital, including Solomianskyi, Darnytskyi, and Dniprovskyi.
The emergency service, through a statement on Telegram, detailed how a missile strike in the Solomianskyi district ignited a fire within a three-story office and warehouse building. Additionally, another warehouse in the Dniprovskyi district was ablaze following another direct hit. The overall devastation highlighted the continued threat posed by the ongoing conflict.
According to Ukraine's Air Force, the attack featured a total of 10 missiles, with six of them categorized as ballistic missiles, alongside 121 drones directed towards Ukrainian targets. In response, Ukraine's air defenses managed to intercept or electronically neutralize two of the incoming missiles and an impressive 111 drones. The Air Force reported that direct hits occurred at 11 distinct locations due to ballistic missiles, with additional strikes from two guided air-to-surface missiles and seven attack drones. Furthermore, falling debris from intercepted weapons caused damage at three other locations throughout the capital.
In a statement regarding the operation, Russia's Defense Ministry claimed that its military forces specifically targeted drone production facilities located in Kyiv, as well as the strategic ports of Izmail and Chornomorsk, situated in Ukraine's southern Odesa region. This claim underlined Russia's aim to disrupt Ukraine's military capabilities and infrastructure.
Meanwhile, the Russian Defense Ministry highlighted its successes, stating that their air defenses effectively destroyed 178 Ukrainian drones overnight over eight different Russian regions, including areas over the Russian-occupied Crimean Peninsula and both the Black and Azov seas. This assertion emphasized the intensity and scale of the ongoing conflict across the region.
