MONTRÉAL – In response to a recent train derailment that occurred northeast of Montreal, Transport Canada has appointed an observer to oversee the investigation. This decision comes after a significant incident that involved 49 railcars going off the tracks near a residential neighborhood in Repentigny, Quebec, over the weekend.
The department has stated that it is closely monitoring the actions taken following the derailment. Fortunately, there were no hazardous materials released during the incident, and there were no injuries reported. However, the derailment did raise concerns due to its proximity to homes located alongside the railway, prompting a careful response.
Transport Canada is ensuring that safety regulations and speed limits are being respected as part of the ongoing oversight. Rail safety inspectors are actively monitoring the measures implemented by CN Rail, the company responsible for operating the train service in the area. Currently, trains in the vicinity are running at a temporary speed limit of approximately 15 kilometers per hour, significantly lower than the regulated limit of 80 kilometers per hour. In a previous communication, CN Rail indicated that their crews have undertaken extensive rebuilding of the track and the track bed following the derailment. Rail traffic was allowed to resume overnight from Tuesday to Wednesday after these crucial repairs. Moreover, CN Rail has also announced plans for additional repair work to further ensure the safety and integrity of the railway infrastructure.
