OTTAWA – The federal government of Canada has announced a significant aid package of $5 million in urgent humanitarian assistance to support Nepal, following a devastating flash flood that affected the border region with China on Wednesday.
This flash flooding, attributed to a glacial collapse along the Himalayan border, has resulted in a tragic death toll of at least 570 people. In a statement, Foreign Affairs Minister Anita Anand noted that the number of missing Canadians and permanent residents in the area has risen to 32. Fortunately, the Nepal Tourism Board has confirmed that no Canadians are among the 121 foreign nationals who have been rescued as of Friday.
The financial contribution from Canada is designated for relief efforts carried out by organizations such as the Red Cross, aimed at providing life-saving assistance on the ground in Nepal. In conjunction with this monetary support, Global Affairs Canada has dispatched five consular officials to Kathmandu to assist Canadians in the area and coordinate efforts with local authorities. Minister Anand indicated that additional personnel could be sent if the situation escalates or requires further support.
During a press conference held on Friday, Anand characterized the humanitarian crisis in Nepal as "devastating," highlighting the catastrophic damage that has occurred. "Families and homes are destroyed. Mudslides have wiped away villages and infrastructure, including bridges,” she stated. She also underscored the challenges communities face as they have become isolated from essential services, including telecommunications.
According to Global Affairs, the department is currently aware of approximately 866 Canadians who are in Nepal during this crisis. Nepal’s disaster management authority reported that the number of people now listed as missing has tragically increased to 1,924, underlining the severity of the situation.
In a related announcement, Prime Minister Mark Carney used social media this week to urge Canadians in the region to register with the Registration of Canadians Abroad service. This free service enables the federal government to contact and assist its citizens during emergencies occurring in foreign countries.
