"Dalhousie Launches Fire Leadership Certificate Program"

A new partnership between Dalhousie University and Nova Scotia to commence the Nova Scotia Fire Service Leadership Certificate was announced on Friday

A new collaboration between Dalhousie University and the government of Nova Scotia was announced on Friday, aimed at launching the Nova Scotia Fire Service Leadership Certificate. This innovative certificate program is designed to provide firefighters with training that addresses the complexities and challenges they face in their modern roles.

According to officials, this partnership aims to equip firefighters with the necessary skills, tools, and support to lead effectively in their communities. Kim Masland, the Minister of Emergency Management, emphasized the importance of this initiative, stating, “Our firefighters step up when their communities need them most. They deserve the training, tools, and support they need to lead with confidence.” She further highlighted that investing in the leadership of fire departments is crucial for enhancing fire services across Nova Scotia.

The application process for the program will commence on Dalhousie’s website in September, with the first two pilot cohorts scheduled to begin in January and April 2027. The pilot program consists of six tailored courses that can be completed online over an 18-month period, requiring three hours of study per week alongside virtual sessions.

The curriculum of the program encompasses a variety of topics deemed essential for modern firefighters, including:

  • station operations
  • fire prevention and suppression
  • municipal administration
  • finance
  • human resources
  • organizational leadership

The program will leverage case studies and real-life examples from Nova Scotia, enabling firefighters from different regions to learn from each other and cultivate a network of fire service leaders. This collaborative format is intended to foster a sense of community and strengthen collective knowledge among firefighters across the province.

Moreover, the courses offered under the Nova Scotia Fire Service Leadership Certificate are fully transferable and can contribute towards Dalhousie’s existing fire service leadership programs, providing additional value to participants looking to advance their education and career prospects.

The Province is committing over $209,000 towards this initiative, highlighting its dedication to enhancing the capabilities of local fire services and ensuring that firefighters are prepared for leadership roles in their communities.

This initiative represents a significant step forward in professional development for firefighters in Nova Scotia, aiming to address their current training needs while preparing them for future challenges.
