British far-right commentator Milo Yiannopoulos has been deported back to the United Kingdom after his arrest by American immigration authorities, according to U.S. officials. Yiannopoulos was returned to his home country on Friday, following accusations of overstaying his visa after entering the U.S. legally in May 2019. An immigration judge had issued a final order of removal on July 22 due to his failure to attend a scheduled immigration hearing, as stated by a Department of Homeland Security spokesperson.
Yiannopoulos was arrested on Thursday at Louis Armstrong New Orleans International Airport in Louisiana and was subsequently detained by Immigration and Customs Enforcement. The Homeland Security spokesperson remarked, "He chose to overstay his welcome in violation of our nation’s laws." So far, Yiannopoulos and his representatives have not responded to requests for comments, and he has not been active on his X social media account since his arrest.
The controversial figure is known for passionately advocating conservative causes and has often made provocative public statements against feminism, Islam, and immigration. He has openly supported former President Donald Trump’s stricter immigration policies, famously stating last year on X, “Zero immigration for the next 20 years. No ifs, no buts.” Recently, he had been working for the rapper Ye, formerly known as Kanye West, who was scheduled to perform in New Orleans shortly after Yiannopoulos' arrest.
Yiannopoulos gained notoriety in the early 2010s as a divisive writer for the conservative website Breitbart News but resigned in 2017 following the resurfacing of a video in which he endorsed pedophilia. He later apologized for his statements, declaring himself a victim of sexual assault as a minor. His recent arrest aligns with a broader increase in immigration-related detentions under Trump’s administration.
Further complicating matters, far-right conservative activist Laura Loomer publicly lauded Yiannopoulos' deportation on social media, highlighting their history of rivalry. She claimed to be the first to disclose that Yiannopoulos was in the U.S. illegally while also insinuating he had incited violence against Trump and had connections with controversial figures like Marjorie Taylor Greene.
Controversy surrounding Yiannopoulos intensified during his “Troll Academy Tour” in 2017, which saw him visiting various college campuses. Protests during his appearances led to violent confrontations, with many students accusing him of hate speech, while others hailed him as a defender of free speech. Media reports from that period also discussed his connections with self-proclaimed white nationalists.
In the following years, Yiannopoulos remained involved in conservative activism. In 2022, he was reported to be interning for former U.S. Representative Marjorie Taylor Greene. He also briefly managed Ye's 2024 presidential campaign. Additionally, Yiannopoulos has served as a spokesperson for Ye, who has faced a plethora of controversies, including public backlash over antisemitic comments, leading to subsequent apologies from the rapper.
