In a tragic incident at a rave in the northern Swiss canton of Aargau, one person has been killed and five others injured following a shooting early Sunday morning. Local police and media outlets reported that the event was taking place at a horse racing track in Aarau when the violence erupted around 2:30 a.m.
According to Aargau cantonal police, a 22-year-old woman succumbed to her injuries on the scene. The injured victims, comprising four men and one woman aged between 24 and 27, were transported to hospitals, with their conditions ranging from minor to serious. The police have confirmed that all of the victims are Swiss residents, but their names have not been disclosed due to privacy laws in the country.
Authorities are actively pursuing suspects in connection with the shooting, with police spokesperson Bernhard Graser stating that the manhunt is ongoing and "continuing nonstop at full speed." He mentioned that no information regarding potential motives has been uncovered yet, but suggested that the nature of the event winding down may hint against the possibility of a terrorist attack. Graser indicated that a fight could have been a more plausible reason for the shooting.
Public shootings are relatively uncommon in Switzerland, despite the country's high levels of gun ownership. Graser remarked on the unique nature of this incident, stating, "In terms of its nature, this incident is certainly unique in recent years." The police presence at the scene reflects the extraordinary circumstances surrounding the event.
The rave, titled "Aarau Rave VOL. 7," was located in Aarau's Schachen district, approximately 46 kilometers (29 miles) west of Zurich. The police established a large cordoned-off area around the venue as part of the investigation. A significant law enforcement operation was still in effect throughout the Sunday afternoon, with local residents being advised to stay clear of the area being searched for potential evidence related to the crime. Officers, firefighters, and ambulances responded in large numbers to the incident.
Police from Freiburg, Germany, have also joined in the search for the suspects, as the investigation widens beyond Swiss borders. Graser noted that virtually the entire Aargau police force is currently deployed on the streets, although they have not identified any areas where the suspects may be hiding. Nonetheless, they have determined that the suspects do not pose an ongoing threat to the public.
Initial reports indicated that rave attendees mistook the gunfire for fireworks until someone shouted for everyone to get down. The shooting occurred shortly after the event concluded, leading law enforcement to transport remaining attendees to a nearby gym for questioning. Police have urged anyone who might have photos or videos from the event to come forward to assist with the investigation.
The Aargau Racing Club, which manages the horse racing track where the incident occurred, expressed deep shock over the shooting. They extended their "deepest sympathy to all those affected and their families" in light of the distressing situation. The club also thanked emergency responders and others involved in managing the incident professionally and diligently.
Swiss DJ Tekibo, who had performed at the rave, expressed his sorrow on Instagram, stating that the occurrences at the Aarau rave are "absolutely heartbreaking." He emphasized that raves should be places of freedom and safety, and not venues for tragedies such as this.
