Two drivers are facing serious speeding charges after being caught by the Halifax Regional Police while traveling at excessively high speeds on Highway 111. The incidents highlight the ongoing efforts by law enforcement to ensure road safety and enforce traffic regulations within the region.
The first enforcement action occurred on August 31 at approximately 9:00 a.m. An officer from the traffic unit recorded a vehicle speeding near Mount Hope Avenue, an area where the speed limit is set at 80 km/h. The vehicle was traveling at a staggering speed of 133 km/h. The 30-year-old male driver was subsequently ticketed under the Motor Vehicle Act for the speeding violation. Additionally, he is facing an offense related to failing to comply with vehicle equipment standards, resulting in a fine of $237.
Following this incident, police continued their patrols and encountered another significant violation just a few days later on September 2, around 9:20 a.m. This time, officers observed a vehicle traveling at an alarming 138 km/h in the same section of Highway 111. The driver, a 30-year-old woman, was also ticketed for her excessive speeding. Along with the speeding fine, she now faces an additional offense for failing to obey a peace officer's instructions.
According to the police, instances of 'stunting' under the Motor Vehicle Act automatically trigger a charge when a vehicle is detected traveling more than 50 km/h above the designated speed limit. The penalties for such offenses in Nova Scotia are severe. For the speeding infraction recorded on September 2, the driver is looking at a substantial fine of $2,422, along with six demerit points assigned to her driving record. Furthermore, her driving privileges will be suspended for a minimum of seven days.
