Venezuela Bans Flights from Colombia Amid Tensions

CARACAS, Venezuela (AP) — Venezuela on Monday banned the arrival of flights from neighboring Colombia after authorities detained more than 30 people who were allegedly plotting activities to destabilize the country

CARACAS, Venezuela (AP) - On Monday, the Venezuelan government announced a ban on all incoming flights from neighboring Colombia. This decision came on the heels of the detention of over 30 individuals who were allegedly involved in a conspiracy to destabilize the nation.

The announcement was made by Interior Minister Diosdado Cabello, who stated that the flight ban would take effect immediately and would extend beyond the upcoming Sunday, a day when elections for governors and members of the National Assembly are slated to take place across Venezuela.

Cabello further elaborated that the alleged anti-government activities were serious in nature, claiming that the detained individuals were planning to use explosives against embassies and other key facilities within the country. Among those apprehended were 21 Venezuelans and 17 foreigners, some of whom reportedly possess Colombian, Mexican, and Ukrainian citizenships.

Without presenting any concrete evidence, Cabello suggested that the detained group was collaborating with members of the political opposition in Venezuela, implying a broader conspiracy to undermine the government.

In response to the situation, officials in Colombia, including the country’s foreign minister and president, did not provide an immediate comment when approached by The Associated Press for clarification.

This development underscores the ongoing tension between Venezuela and Colombia, particularly in the context of political strife and security concerns. The timing of the flight ban, coinciding with a significant electoral event, raises questions about the Venezuelan government’s strategy to control the narrative and maintain stability in a politically volatile environment.

As the situation unfolds, the implications of this flight ban for both travelers and diplomatic relations between Venezuela and Colombia remain to be seen.
