MANILA, Philippines (AP) — In a significant political shift, Philippine President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. has requested all Cabinet secretaries to submit their resignations. This move, described as a "bold reset," comes on the heels of last week's mid-term elections, in which several opposition candidates secured critical Senate positions.

Ferdinand Marcos Jr., the 67-year-old son of a former dictator ousted in 1986, achieved a remarkable political comeback in the 2022 presidential elections, winning by a landslide amidst a deeply divided electorate. Despite his initial call for national unity, tensions have escalated within his administration, particularly following a fallout with his popular vice-presidential running mate, Sara Duterte. This rift has led to heightened political discord and challenges for Marcos.

Marcos has positioned himself as a strong critic of China's expanding influence in the region, supported by key allies such as the United States. His administration contends with numerous domestic issues, notably inflation and unmet campaign promises related to rice prices. Furthermore, the country has faced growing concerns over crime, including reports of kidnappings.

In a statement released by the government, Marcos emphasized, "This is not business as usual." He acknowledged the public's desire for results and committed to action over political excuses. The call for courtesy resignations is intended to provide Marcos the opportunity to assess each department's performance and realign his administration’s priorities according to the outcomes of the recent elections.

At least 21 Cabinet secretaries, led by Executive Secretary Lucas Bersamin, have either promptly submitted their resignations or expressed their readiness to do so. Marcos reiterated that the focus is not on individual personalities but on improving performance and ensuring alignment with the administration's goals. He stated, "Those who have delivered and continue to deliver will be recognized. But we cannot afford to be complacent. The time for comfort zones is over."

The government has assured that services will remain uninterrupted during this transitional phase, asserting that this "bold reset" signifies a new and focused approach by the Marcos administration to address the pressing needs of the populace.

The recent mid-term elections have added complexity to Marcos's political landscape, as five out of twelve contested Senate seats were secured by allies of Sara Duterte, whose father, former President Rodrigo Duterte, is facing allegations of crimes against humanity related to a controversial anti-drug campaign. The election results are crucial, as the Senate will play a pivotal role in an upcoming impeachment trial for Sara Duterte, who faces various accusations, including corruption and threats made against Marcos and other officials.

In addition to the Senate elections, several seats in the House of Representatives were won by candidates aligned with Marcos and his cousin, House Speaker Martin Romualdez. This political maneuvering is anticipated to be a precursor for the next presidential elections scheduled for 2028.
