PARIS (AP) – A devastating fire broke out in a 10-story housing block in Reims, the capital of France's Champagne region, resulting in the tragic loss of four lives. This extremely violent blaze, which authorities have linked to a battery-powered electric scooter, occurred in the early hours of Friday.

According to Reims prosecutor François Schneider, the incident took a particularly harrowing turn when a 13-year-old boy jumped to his death from the fourth-floor apartment where the fire ignited. It is believed that his older brother, aged 15, was found deceased inside their home, likely succumbing to the fire’s swift advance. The fire also claimed the lives of an 87-year-old woman and her 59-year-old son, who were residents of the eighth floor and tragically suffocated due to the smoke.

In addition to the fatalities, two individuals sustained serious injuries, including the boys' stepfather, who suffered severe burns. Another 26 people were treated in hospitals for less critical injuries, underscoring the fire's widespread impact on the building's residents.

Prosecutor Schneider emphasized that there is “no doubt” regarding the accidental nature of the blaze, which spread rapidly after the electric scooter ignited for unknown reasons. He noted the unique challenges presented by battery fires, stating that they are “extremely difficult to extinguish.” Firefighters encountered significant challenges in containing the blaze, laboring for over three hours to bring it under control.

The tragedy has raised concerns about the safety of electric scooters, particularly concerning their battery systems, which can pose significant hazards in residential areas. The incident highlights the importance of proper safety protocols and awareness of potential fire risks associated with such devices.
