"Angel City FC Stands Up for Immigrant Rights"

Angel City, the National Women’s Soccer League team based in Los Angeles, distributed T-shirts to fans on Saturday that proclaimed “Immigrant City Football Club

Angel City, the National Women’s Soccer League (NWSL) team based in Los Angeles, made headlines on Saturday by distributing T-shirts that boldly declared “Immigrant City Football Club.” This initiative aimed to show solidarity with immigrants in the city who have been facing increased scrutiny from U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) agents. Members of the team, along with coaching staff, donned the shirts prior to their match against the North Carolina Courage, further emphasizing their support for the immigrant community.

The T-shirts featured the slogan “Los Angeles is for Everyone” printed on the back, presented in both English and Spanish. In total, the team distributed around 10,000 shirts, reflecting their strong commitment to inclusivity and support for marginalized groups within the city.

This show of support occurred amidst heightened tensions surrounding immigration policies in the United States. Protests erupted in Los Angeles the previous week in response to President Donald Trump’s controversial immigration policies, which have drawn significant public outcry. In light of these protests, National Guard members and Marine troops have been deployed to the city, which has also seen numerous similar demonstrations occurring across the country.

Angel City released a poignant statement on social media addressing the ongoing protests, expressing empathy for those affected. The team conveyed their heartbreak over the fear and uncertainty the community is experiencing, affirming their belief in a diverse city. “At Angel City, we believe in the power of belonging,” the statement read. “We know that our city is stronger because of its diversity and the people and families who shape it, love it, and call it home.”

Furthermore, the players' unions for both the NWSL and the Women’s National Basketball Association (WNBA) joined in solidarity with families experiencing fear, hardship, and uncertainty related to immigration issues. In a joint statement, the NWSL Players Association (NWSLPA) and the Women's National Basketball Players Association (WNBPA) stated, “We stand with all people seeking safety, dignity, and opportunity, no matter where they come from or where they hope to go.” They emphasized the importance of treating every individual with dignity and respect, acknowledging the complexity of many situations, yet asserting that compassion should always be prioritized in discussions about immigration.

This initiative by Angel City not only highlights the team's dedication to social justice but also reflects a broader movement within athletics, where athletes and organizations harness their platforms to advocate for important societal issues. The profound impact of such statements and actions extends beyond the soccer field, resonating within the community and offering support to those who feel marginalized by current policies.
