ATHENS, Greece (AP) — A wildfire has been raging uncontrollably on the eastern Aegean island of Chios for the third consecutive day, prompting authorities to issue multiple evacuation orders. As of Tuesday, firefighters, supported by aircraft, are engaged in a fierce battle against the flames, which have engulfed both forest and agricultural areas. A state of emergency has been declared on the island, and firefighting reinforcements have been deployed from Athens, Thessaloniki, and the nearby island of Lesbos.
By Tuesday morning, a substantial force of 444 firefighters, equipped with 85 vehicles, was combating the blaze across various fronts. The fire's intensity necessitated aerial support, which included 11 helicopters and two water-dumping planes actively working to contain the fire. Since it began near the island's main town on Sunday, emergency services have proceeded to issue evacuation orders for several villages and settlements in the vicinity.
In response to the ever-worsening situation, the fire department has dispatched an arson investigation team to Chios to ascertain the cause of the wildfire. Climate Crisis and Civil Protection Minister Giannis Kefalogiannis, speaking from the island on Monday, indicated that the occurrence of simultaneous wildfires in multiple, geographically unconnected areas was suspicious and warranted serious investigation. He stated, “a pattern that cannot be considered coincidental” suggests the possibility of an organized criminal act, specifically arson. Consequently, police forces on Chios have been reinforced, and military patrols have been increased to help maintain order.
Minister Kefalogiannis further declared a zero-tolerance policy towards anyone attempting to recklessly endanger citizens' lives with premeditated actions. “Whoever thinks that they can play with the lives of citizens and cause chaos with premeditated actions will be led to court,” he asserted. He emphasized that arson is a grave offense that will be prosecuted to the fullest extent of the law.
Wildfires are a frequent occurrence in Greece, particularly during the hot and dry summer months. A devastating fire in 2018 exemplified the potential for tragedy in such situations when flames swept through the seaside town of Mati, east of Athens, trapping many residents in their homes and on the roads. The catastrophic event claimed the lives of more than 100 individuals, including some who drowned while attempting to escape the flames by swimming.
The ongoing wildfire on Chios reflects not only the natural risks associated with Greece's climate but also the human threats posed by potential arsonists taking advantage of the conditions. With robust firefighting efforts underway, authorities remain vigilant for signs of deliberate wrongdoing as they strive to protect both property and lives in this vulnerable region.
