GUATEMALA CITY (AP) – Members of Guatemala's two largest gangs, Barrio 18 and Mara Salvatrucha, initiated riots in two separate prisons on Tuesday. The unrest was sparked by demands for the return of 10 gang leaders who were recently transferred to solitary confinement in another prison.
Interior Minister Francisco Jiménez reported to The Associated Press that the rioting gang members are currently holding at least six prison guards hostage, one of whom has suffered a gunshot wound. These actions underscore the increasing volatility within the prison system as gang leaders attempt to reassert their control over their organizations.
According to Jiménez, the prison disturbances are focused on the push for the gang leaders' return from Renovación I prison, where they were relocated to limit their ability to exert influence over their gangs. The gangs are seeking to regain their operational power, which they feel has been severely curtailed by the government's decision to isolate their leaders.
Amid the chaos, Jiménez took to social media to assert the government’s stance, stating, "The Guatemalan state will not bow down to you."
