COLUMBIA, S.C. (AP) — A tragic incident occurred in South Carolina when Trooper First Class Dennis Ricks succumbed to injuries sustained after being struck by a box truck. The incident transpired three days prior to his death, which was confirmed on Wednesday at a hospital, according to a news release from the Department of Public Safety. Trooper Ricks had been a dedicated member of the Highway Patrol for two years.
On Sunday morning at approximately 2 a.m., Ricks had conducted a traffic stop on Interstate 26 near Orangeburg. After completing the stop, he was walking back to his cruiser, which had its blue lights activated, when he was hit by a box truck. This unexpected collision led to severe injuries that ultimately claimed his life.
The driver of the box truck was subsequently charged with driving under suspension. During a bond hearing held on Monday, authorities indicated that additional charges may be forthcoming, contingent upon the outcome of the trooper's condition at that time. The driver expressed remorse during the hearing, stating that his primary concern was for Ricks’s recovery.
This incident marks a significant loss for the South Carolina Highway Patrol, as Trooper Ricks became the first trooper to die in the line of duty since 2017. The Department of Public Safety expressed their condolences in a public statement, highlighting the profound impact of this loss not only on Ricks's family but also on his colleagues within the Highway Patrol and the broader Department of Public Safety community. “This is a devastating loss for his family, for those who worked alongside him in Troop Seven, and the entire Highway Patrol and DPS family,” they stated.
In light of this tragedy, an online fundraiser has been initiated by Ricks's wife. In her heartfelt tribute, she described her husband as her "safe place" and "strength." She emphasized his kindness, gentleness, and the profound role he played in her life, stating, "To say he is a phenomenal man and husband is quite an understatement.”
The loss of Trooper Dennis Ricks highlights the dangers law enforcement officers face daily while serving the public. His commitment and sacrifices are remembered, as the community reflects on the valiant role he played in keeping South Carolina safe during his tenure.
As the investigation into the incident continues, law enforcement and the affected communities come together to support Ricks's family through this unthinkable time.
