KINSHASA, Congo (AP) — In a series of brutal attacks, suspected Islamist rebels have reportedly killed at least 30 individuals in Bapere village, located in Congo's North Kivu province. These killings occurred between Wednesday and Friday, as detailed by Colonel Alain Kiwawa, the military administrator of Lubero territory where Bapere is situated.

Colonel Kiwawa disclosed that the attack has also resulted in at least a hundred individuals being taken hostage. He highlighted the grim nature of the assaults, stating that many victims were killed with knives, and numerous houses were set ablaze during the chaos. This pattern of violence reflects a worrying trend in the region, where many such incidents have been attributed to the Allied Democratic Forces (ADF), an armed group aligned with the Islamic State.

This recent surge in violence is particularly alarming as it follows a previous attack by the ADF last month, where nearly 40 people were killed in an assault on a Catholic church in Ituri province. In that attack, most victims were reportedly murdered with machetes, underscoring the brutal tactics employed by the group. The ADF, which has its roots in neighboring Uganda, has persisted in its violent campaign across the border regions, leading to a significant humanitarian crisis.

Despite joint military operations launched by both Congolese and Ugandan forces against the ADF, the group has only intensified its offensive in recent months. This escalation adds to the already complex security challenges faced in eastern Congo, which is riddled with numerous other armed groups. Additionally, the Congolese central government is grappling with the M23 rebels, who have seized control of key cities, including Goma.

In light of the ongoing violence, Colonel Kiwawa has urged the local population to remain vigilant and proactive in their safety. He called upon the community to report any suspicious activities and to be prepared for potential further attacks.
