PARIS (AP) — A tragic fire occurred on Saturday in a retirement home located in Bouffémont, just near Paris, resulting in the deaths of three residents. The victims were identified as individuals aged 68, 85, and 96, as confirmed by the Val-d’Oise prefecture in a statement referenced by French media outlets. The authorities reported that all three fatalities were due to smoke inhalation during the incident.
In addition to the fatalities, the fire left nine other individuals injured. This group comprised seven residents and two staff members who also suffered from smoke inhalation. Emergency services responded by transporting eight of the injured individuals to various hospitals in the Paris region to receive medical treatment for their injuries.
Mayor Michel Lacoux addressed the situation during an interview with BFM TV, expressing the seriousness of the event for the community. He stated, “This is a serious event for our town,” and noted that preliminary assessments suggest that the fire may have been an accident. The mayor provided details about the fire’s origin, indicating that it likely began in a laundry room before it escalated and spread to part of the third floor of the facility.
Commandant Adrien Ponin-Sinapayen, who serves as a spokesperson for France’s civil defense agency, reported that a significant firefighting effort was mobilized to handle the situation, with 140 firefighters dispatched to the scene. Their combined efforts successfully extinguished the fire, preventing further damage and potential casualties.
