"Russian Drone Attack Kills Two in Dnipro Apartment"

KYIV, Ukraine (AP) — A Russian drone slammed into a tower block in eastern Ukraine early on Saturday while many were sleeping, killing two women and leaving 12 people injured, Ukrainian authorities reported

On Saturday, a devastating Russian drone strike hit a residential tower block in Dnipro, eastern Ukraine, tragically resulting in the deaths of two women and injuring twelve others. This incident occurred during the early morning hours while many residents were asleep, as reported by Ukrainian authorities.

The attack on Dnipro, which is Ukraine's fourth-largest city, was part of a broader offensive by Russia that involved a significant missile and drone assault across various regions of the country, targeting critical energy infrastructure. In this wave of aggression, Russian forces launched a total of 458 drones and 45 missiles, including 32 ballistic ones. Ukrainian air defense managed to neutralize 406 drones and nine missiles during the onslaught, although 25 locations were still struck, highlighting the severity of the attack.

Following the assaults, Ukrainian Energy Minister Svitlana Grynchuk announced on Facebook that power had been shut off in several regions to mitigate the impacts of the missile and drone strikes. Emergency services reported a fire at the nine-story apartment building in Dnipro, where several apartments were destroyed. Among the casualties, the bodies of the two deceased women were recovered, and two children were reported among the injured.

Nearly four years post the commencement of Russia's full-scale invasion, the country has continued its relentless campaign of drone and missile attacks against Ukraine, leading to numerous civilian casualties. The ongoing strikes have resulted in rolling blackouts across various regions, with national energy operators noting widespread disruptions as Russia seeks to cripple Ukraine's power grid ahead of the winter months. The Kremlin maintains that its military operations are exclusively focused on facilities related to Ukraine's war efforts.

In eastern Ukraine, the city of Pokrovsk has become a focal point of fierce fighting as both Ukrainian and Russian forces work to gain the upper hand. Analysts suggest that the outcome in Pokrovsk could significantly influence U.S. President Donald Trump's perspective on the conflict, as both sides vie for support from Washington. This city lies along the eastern front line, part of what is referred to as the "fortress belt" of Donetsk, a series of heavily fortified locations critical to Ukraine's defense in the region.

Russian President Vladimir Putin claims his forces are on the brink of achieving victory in Ukraine. Yet, he demands as a precondition for peace that Ukraine cede control over the Donbas region, consisting of Donetsk and the adjacent Luhansk, which remains one of his principal goals during the war.

The situation remains precarious as Ukraine endures escalating military aggression from Russia, with civilian security and energy infrastructure under constant threat. The developments in Dnipro and Pokrovsk further underscore the ongoing challenges faced by Ukrainian forces and the urgent need for a comprehensive strategy to address the conflict's humanitarian and military dimensions.
