TOKYO (AP) — A devastating fire broke out in a neighborhood of Oita, located on the southern main island of Kyushu in Japan, during strong winds on Tuesday evening. The blaze has resulted in significant destruction, with at least 170 homes damaged or completely destroyed, and has forced more than 170 residents to evacuate the area. Japan's Fire and Disaster Management Agency reported that a man in his 70s remains unaccounted for amid the chaos.

The fire originated near a fishing port in Oita and quickly spread to nearby forested areas. The Japanese Ground Self-Defense Force also joined the firefighting efforts by dispatching two UH-1 army helicopters to assist in battling the flames from above.
