"Switzerland Mourns 40 Lives Lost in Bar Fire"

MARTIGNY, Switzerland (AP) — A national day of mourning is set to take place on Friday in Switzerland, honoring the 40 individuals who tragically lost their lives in a fire at an Alpine bar during a New Year’s celebration. The fire occurred at the Le Constellation bar in Crans-Montana, just hours after the clock struck midnight on January 1, leaving 116 others injured, many of them severely.

Investigators suspect that the source of the fire was sparkling candles placed atop Champagne bottles, which ignited when they were positioned too close to the bar's ceiling. The authorities are currently examining whether the soundproofing materials used in the ceiling adhered to safety regulations and if the use of candles was permissible within the establishment. Notably, fire safety inspections for Le Constellation had not been conducted since 2019, raising further concerns about compliance with safety protocols.

The impact of the fire was severe, with many victims suffering critical burns that complicated identification efforts. To assist in this process, families were required to provide DNA samples to the authorities. Reports indicate that a significant number of the deceased were young adults, ranging from their teens to mid-20s.

As a part of the ongoing investigation, Swiss authorities have launched a criminal inquiry into the bar’s managers, who are facing charges of involuntary homicide, involuntary bodily harm, and negligently causing a fire. The Valais region’s chief prosecutor has confirmed these allegations, indicating the severity of the case.

In commemoration of the victims, church bells throughout Switzerland will toll for five minutes starting at 2 p.m. local time on Friday, accompanied by a minute of silence nationwide. This collective act of remembrance reflects the nation’s mourning and solidarity in the wake of such a devastating incident.

As the legal proceedings unfold and safety evaluations are re-examined, the community of Crans-Montana mourns not only the loss of life but also the profound impact this tragedy has had on families and friends. Memorials continue to spring up around the bar, as residents and visitors pay their respects, placing flowers and candles in memory of those who perished in the fire.
