WASHINGTON (AP) — U.S. Senator Lindsey Graham, one of President Donald Trump’s prominent allies, passed away on Saturday evening at the age of 71 due to a "brief and sudden illness," as announced by his office via a social media statement. The specifics surrounding the circumstances of his death were not disclosed, but his family expressed their appreciation for prayers and requested privacy during this challenging time.
Former President Trump expressed his grief on social media early Sunday, calling Graham "one of the greatest people and Senators I have ever known," and emphasized that he was a "true American Patriot" who would be greatly missed. Senate Majority Leader John Thune, R-S.D., also commemorated Graham, highlighting his long-service in the Air Force and Congress, along with his commitment to advocating for the U.S. and freedom-loving nations globally.
First elected to the Senate in 2002 after serving in the House of Representatives, Lindsey Graham was known for his advocacy of robust U.S. military interventionism and a strong national defense. His foreign policy stance often placed him at odds with the growing isolationist sentiments within the Republican Party. Graham initially had a contentious relationship with Trump; he labeled Trump "unfit for office" and criticized him for derogatory remarks against the late Senator John McCain, Graham's close friend. However, following Trump’s election victory in 2016, Graham's position shifted, and he evolved into one of Trump’s staunchest supporters, frequently consulting with him on policy matters and appearing together at various events.
The senator played a significant role in advising Trump on foreign policy issues, particularly focusing on relations with Iran and Russia. Just days before his death, Graham had announced a pact with the Trump administration to progress with a package of sanctions against Russia. He had been in Ukraine to meet with President Volodymyr Zelenskyy, emphasizing his commitment to global freedom and democracy during the ongoing Russian invasion of Ukraine. Zelenskyy referred to Graham as a "true defender of freedom," showcasing the respect he garnered from international leaders.
In addition to his extensive foreign policy work, Graham had a prominent legislative career in the U.S. Senate. He was serving as the chairman of the Senate Budget Committee during Trump’s second term, where he was instrumental in passing major legislation with minimal opposition using the reconciliation process. He also chaired the Senate Judiciary Committee, overseeing significant confirmations, including that of Justice Amy Coney Barrett to the Supreme Court in 2020. Graham was an influential figure during the crafting of a comprehensive immigration reform package in 2013, although his immigration reform views sometimes alienated him from factions within the Republican Party.
Despite navigating challenges, including primary threats in his home state of South Carolina, Graham recently secured his nomination for a fifth term and was preparing for a general election against Democrat Annie Andrews, a pediatrician. Following his nomination victory, Graham had expressed his desire to support Trump in effecting change in the world and his country.
Graham's unexpected passing has raised concerns regarding lawmakers' health transparency, a discussion that has emerged recently in light of other legislators who have faced health issues. In accordance with South Carolina law, Governor Henry McMaster will appoint a temporary successor to Graham, who will remain in the role until January. McMaster remarked on Graham's unique contributions as "irreplaceable," expressing his condolences to Graham’s family and underscoring his unwavering commitment to the state and the nation.
As a lifelong bachelor with no children, the senator's closest living relative is his sister, Darline Graham Nordone, whom he helped raise after the death of their parents. His legacy as a significant political figure in U.S. history will be remembered alongside the relationships he fostered both domestically and internationally.
