DEIR AL-BALAH, Gaza Strip (AP) — On Sunday, Israeli military actions in Gaza resulted in the deaths of at least six Palestinians, including a 9-year-old girl, and left more than a dozen others injured, as reported by local health officials.

A drone strike targeted a blacksmith shop in the Sabra neighborhood of Gaza City, leading to the death of at least four individuals. Officials at Shifa Hospital confirmed the casualties, emphasizing the severe impact of the strike. The Israeli military acknowledged the bombardment, stating it was aimed at "terrorist infrastructure," though further details were not provided. Subsequently, the military clarified that the strike specifically hit a Hamas weapon production site.

Following the initial strikes, the Israeli military issued an evacuation order for Palestinians in the affected area. Approximately an hour after this warning, intense airstrikes targeted the same blacksmith shop again, causing even more casualties. The Palestinian Red Crescent Society reported that a total of 14 people were wounded in connection with the strikes in Gaza City.

Tragically, 9-year-old Tala Abu Matar was killed by Israeli gunfire while at a displacement camp in central Gaza, according to the Health Ministry. The Israeli military claimed they were not aware of this incident occurring. Additionally, an Israeli strike on a displacement tent in Khan Younis, located in southern Gaza, resulted in the death of one Palestinian. Health officials at Nasser Hospital confirmed this casualty, while the military referred to the strike as "part of routine activities" and stated they did not have information about any deaths.

While Israeli strikes have decreased in frequency since a ceasefire took effect on October 10, they continue to occur almost daily. The Israeli military asserts that its operations target Hamas and other militant groups, frequently claiming that these groups are plotting attacks. However, these military actions have also led to a significant number of civilian casualties.

According to the Gaza Health Ministry, a total of at least 1,098 Palestinians have been killed since the ceasefire, including at least 260 children. In contrast, five Israeli soldiers have lost their lives in the same period. The violent conflict escalated after the October 7, 2023, attack by Hamas-led militants, which claimed approximately 1,200 lives in Israel and resulted in 251 hostages being taken.

The ongoing retaliatory offensive by Israel has reportedly resulted in the deaths of 73,221 Palestinians, according to figures gathered by the Health Ministry. This organization, which operates under the Hamas-led government, consists of medical professionals who maintain meticulous records that are generally regarded as reliable by United Nations agencies and independent experts. It is essential to note that these statistics do not differentiate between civilians and militants, although around half of the reported casualties are believed to be women and children.

Negotiations between Israel and Hamas for the second phase of the ceasefire implementation remain largely stalled. Key issues include disarming Hamas and the reconstruction of Gaza. The majority of Gaza's over two million residents continue to be displaced, with many living in overcrowded tent camps that offer minimal basic services or residing in the ruins of destroyed buildings.
