Tragedy has struck the Canadian Football League (CFL) with the unexpected death of Saskatchewan Roughriders linebacker and team captain Jayden Dalke. According to an announcement made by the team on Sunday, Dalke tragically lost his life in a car accident on Saturday evening. He was only 30 years old.
Jayden Dalke hailed from Leduc, Alberta, and had been a member of the Roughriders since being selected as a sixth-round pick in the 2022 CFL Draft. His impact on the team was notable, and he quickly became a beloved figure both on and off the field.
In a statement released by the Saskatchewan Roughriders, the team expressed its profound sadness over Dalke's untimely passing. They described him as a “relentless warrior” whose determination, toughness, and work ethic inspired his teammates. The team emphasized that Dalke made a lasting impression on those around him, sharing that “no one ever left a conversation with him without a smile.” The statement underscored Dalke's embodiment of the spirit of the Saskatchewan Roughriders and conveyed heartfelt condolences to the Dalke family, who traveled across the country to support him in living out his dream.
Before his passing, Dalke had recently returned to the Roughriders lineup in the team's last game against the Hamilton Tiger-Cats, having missed time due to an upper-body injury. His efforts were recognized when he was placed on the CFL’s honour roll for his performance in Week 7, highlighting his contributions to special teams.
During his time in the league, Dalke made significant contributions to the Roughriders, participating in all 18 regular-season games and two postseason games last year, ultimately helping the team secure the Grey Cup championship. Over his career, he played a total of 68 games in the CFL, a testament to his skill and dedication.
Before joining the CFL, Dalke played U Sports football at the University of Alberta, where he earned accolades, including a first-team all-Canadian honor in 2019, followed by a second-team all-Canadian recognition in 2021. His collegiate career was marked by outstanding performance, showcasing his potential that would later translate to success at the professional level.
In light of this heartbreaking event, the Roughriders canceled their practice on Sunday as a mark of respect. The team is scheduled to resume practice on Monday in preparation for their upcoming game against the Edmonton Elks on Thursday.
CFL Commissioner Stewart Johnston added to the tributes, expressing his immense sadness regarding Dalke's passing. In his statement, he recognized the linebacker as a passionate competitor known for his incredible heart. He also highlighted Dalke's leadership qualities in the locker room as well as his dedication to community involvement.
