The Royal Canadian Mounted Police (RCMP) conducted a traffic stop on September 12, 2026, after observing suspicious driving behavior from a Dodge Nitro SUV. The incident occurred around 10:15 p.m. in the vicinity of the 15000 block, where the vehicle was seen drifting from side to side within its lane.
Upon pulling over the SUV, the officer engaged with the driver, raising suspicions about potential impairment. The driver, a 45-year-old man from Halifax, provided two breath samples, both of which failed. Following the initial tests, he was taken to the RCMP detachment for further assessment, where his blood alcohol concentration levels were recorded at 150 mg and 140 mg per cent, nearly double the legal limit.
The man was subsequently arrested and charged with impaired driving. Officials noted that he is expected to make a court appearance at an undetermined date. The RCMP emphasized the severity of impaired driving, stating that it is a leading factor in serious collisions and poses a significant threat to public safety.
Increased Enforcement in HRM
Authorities have been actively enforcing impaired driving laws in and around the Halifax Regional Municipality (HRM). Recently, there have been multiple incidents involving impaired drivers, highlighting the dangers posed to public safety. In late August, RCMP were alerted by a member of the public about a driver who was reportedly unconscious in a restaurant drive-thru.
Upon arrival at approximately 12:25 a.m., the officers took a proactive approach and deployed a tire deflation device before waking the driver. When awakened, the 42-year-old man attempted to flee from police on Sackville Drive. However, officers managed to identify and track him down at a residence on Spinner Avenue by 3:55 a.m. He is now facing several charges, including flight from police.
On the same morning, officers discovered an Audi S3 that had left the roadway on the Ingramport Connector. When they arrived on the scene, the driver was found outside the vehicle and appeared to be impaired. After submitting to a breath test before being transported to a detachment, his results were recorded at 180 mg% and 170 mg%. The 20-year-old driver from Lakeside is also expected to appear in court at a later date.
The recent spate of incidents underscores the ongoing challenges faced by law enforcement in deterring impaired driving. The RCMP continues to stress the importance of public safety on roadways, particularly in light of rising incidents of dangerous driving behavior within the HRM.
