Neighbourhood Placemaking applications are now open for the Halifax region and will remain available until Sunday, November 8. This annual program, supported by the municipality, aims to foster community connections through various neighbourhood projects.
Past projects that have gained success include initiatives such as seed and plant libraries, neighbourhood benches, upcycled art installations, and street painting. The program provides an opportunity for residents to engage in placemaking activities that enhance their local areas.
Successful applicants will benefit from training, guidance, and funding tailored for their community projects. There are three distinct project streams available for those interested in applying:
- Placemaking Create: This stream supports neighbour-led placemaking projects across any theme. Successful projects can receive funding ranging from $1,500 to $4,000.
- Placemaking Art: Designed for projects that address any topic and intend to hire an artist. Successful initiatives under this stream may obtain between $3,000 and $7,000 in funding.
- Environmental Placemaking: Focused on projects that enhance climate resilience and sustainability within neighbourhoods, this category offers funding of $3,000 to $10,000 for successful applicants.
The application form is accessible at this link. The form includes questions about team members, a project description, and the significance of the project to the community.
This initiative aligns with the city's 2026-2030 Strategic Plan, which envisions the creation of more welcoming and livable communities throughout Halifax.
To further support applicants, the municipality is hosting a virtual program information session on Tuesday, October 20, from 6:30 to 7:30 p.m. Participants wishing to attend can register by sending an email to placemaking@halifax.ca with their name, neighbourhood, and email address.
Residents unable to participate in the information session are encouraged to connect with the Community Developer for their area. This allows individuals to discuss their project ideas and receive guidance prior to the application deadline.
