The Oklahoma State softball team is set to return to the field on Friday after grappling with the emotional aftermath of a tragic incident involving their team bus earlier this week. The incident occurred while the team was en route to Wichita, Kansas, on Wednesday afternoon when their bus struck and killed a pedestrian who had reportedly been stepping into oncoming traffic multiple times.
According to the Oklahoma Highway Patrol, there had been prior calls to report the pedestrian's erratic behavior before the crash. The pedestrian stepped onto the highway again just as the bus was driving on I-35 northbound, near Perry, Oklahoma. The bus driver, noticing the unfolding situation, attempted to switch lanes to avoid the individual. However, the pedestrian moved into the path of the bus, leaving the driver unable to stop in time, resulting in the fatal accident.
A statement from Oklahoma State's softball social media accounts confirmed that there were no injuries among the travel party involved in the crash. Prior to this, the team had games scheduled against Wichita State on Wednesday, which were postponed indefinitely due to the incident.
Cowgirls head coach Kenny Gajewski mentioned that the team took Thursday morning to regroup in Wichita before heading to Ames, Iowa, where they are slated to play a doubleheader against Iowa State on Friday. Gajewski expressed gratitude towards the Wichita State softball team for their support during this challenging time, saying, “Thank you to @GoShockersSB for allowing us to come by and heal a bit this morning. When times are tough, we turn to our friends.”
The three-game series against Iowa State has been adjusted due to anticipated inclement weather on Saturday. Originally, the games were planned for Friday, Saturday, and Sunday. However, the revised schedule now includes two games on Friday and one game on Sunday, allowing the teams to adapt to the weather conditions.
This tragic event highlights the unpredictability of life, where a routine travel day for the team turned into a significant moment of reflection and grieving. The team will undoubtedly carry the emotional weight of this incident as they step back onto the field, showing resilience and support for one another during a shared moment of loss.
