LONDON (AP) – British actor Micheal Ward was acquitted of rape and related charges in a London court on Friday, following allegations that he sexually assaulted a woman in a Mercedes in 2023. The incident had garnered considerable media attention, but the jury at Snaresbrook Crown Court ultimately found Ward not guilty of two counts of rape, as well as two counts of assault by penetration and one count of sexual assault.
Micheal Ward, 28, is known for his role in the Netflix crime drama "Top Boy," which has received critical acclaim. He has also appeared in notable films, including "Blue Story," "The Book of Clarence," and last year’s political satire "Eddington," where he starred alongside high-profile actors Joaquin Phoenix and Pedro Pascal. His work in the entertainment industry has notably distinguished him as a rising talent.
In 2020, Ward won the Rising Star award at the prestigious British Academy Film Awards (BAFTAs). Additionally, he was nominated for an acting BAFTA for his performance in Sam Mendes’ film "Empire of Light," as well as for a BAFTA television award for his role in the Steve McQueen-directed anthology series "Small Axe." These nominations and awards highlight his contributions and promise in the arts.
Throughout the legal proceedings, Ward maintained his innocence, expressing his "full faith" that he would be exonerated. His defense lawyer, Humzah Ilyas, stated that Ward is now looking forward to returning to his passion for acting, free from the weight of the charges that had been against him.
The case and its implications for Ward have sparked broader discussions about legal proceedings in sexual assault allegations, highlighting the significance of the jury's decision in public perception and individual lives. With this verdict, Ward hopes to resume his career and continue making an impact in the film and television industry.
