"Lincoln Reflecting Pool Renovations Face Setbacks"

WASHINGTON (AP) — Crews are again draining the Lincoln Memorial Reflecting Pool as President Donald Trump’s problem-plagued efforts to revamp the waterway pushes well past his initial goal of having it ready by July 4 to mark the nation’s 250th birthday

Crews are currently draining the Lincoln Memorial Reflecting Pool as President Donald Trump’s ambitious plans to revamp the waterway have exceeded their initial timeline. The project was initially projected to be completed by July 4, 2026, in preparation for the United States' 250th birthday celebration.

President Trump had originally boasted that the renovations would last for a century. However, just weeks after the completion of the restoration works, the pool experienced severe issues, including an algae bloom and peeling coatings on the bottom. Trump has placed blame for the peeling primarily on vandals, while critics assert that it stems from subpar repair work.

Interior Secretary Doug Burgum, whose agency is responsible for the National Park Service, stated in a recent interview that the draining of the pool was a planned part of the maintenance process. He acknowledged that debris from the extensive Independence Day fireworks display might still linger in the water. Burgum described the necessary steps: "Drain the water, clean up the fireworks stuff, repair the vandalism that was done, and fill it back up again."

The Reflecting Pool project is one of several high-profile initiatives championed by Trump in the nation’s capital. Notably, he has also renovated the White House’s East Wing, transforming it into a $400 million ballroom, and advanced plans for a monumental arch between the Lincoln Memorial and Arlington National Cemetery.

Trump initially announced the beautification efforts for the Reflecting Pool in spring, targeting completion before the Independence Day celebrations. As part of this effort, he ordered the bottom to be painted what he described as "American flag blue." In early May, he expressed on social media that the project was ahead of schedule.

Despite these optimistic projections, issues emerged shortly after the renovation concluded. Court documents revealed that the National Park Service reported an incident on June 9 when a sharp object was used to cut the pool's new liner. On Thursday, former Olympic canoe racer David Hearn pleaded not guilty in D.C. Superior Court to charges of intentionally damaging the Reflecting Pool. Hearn explained that he was only examining the damaged sealant when he unintentionally released a piece of it after being instructed to do so by a park worker.

Both Hearn and his legal team, along with other critics of the Trump administration, have denounced the prosecution as an overreach and argue he is being unfairly targeted for the mishaps in the Reflecting Pool's renovations. At least three other individuals have been charged with misdemeanors for allegedly removing paint samples from the pool, all of whom also pleaded not guilty during their court appearances earlier this week.

During the recent Independence Day celebration, the pool was closed to the public, showcasing what Trump described as the world’s largest fireworks display. Following this event, another draining of the pool became necessary as part of the repair process. Additionally, Burgum indicated that the Trump administration intends to retain the same contractors for the ongoing repairs instead of seeking new bids. Green Water Solutions, based in Ohio, was awarded a $1.7 million contract for a water purification system installation, while Virginia-based Atlantic Industrial Coatings received a $14.7 million contract to refinish and waterproof the pool’s concrete base.

This controversial project has prompted investigations by Democratic senators and House members, who are probing into the extent of taxpayer funding utilized for these renovations.
