"Marvel's 'Thunderbolts' Dominates Box Office Again"

Marvel’s “Thunderbolts” and Ryan Coogler’s “Sinners” dominated the North American box office charts again this weekend

This weekend, Marvel's "Thunderbolts" and Ryan Coogler's "Sinners" continued to dominate the North American box office charts. In their second and fourth weekends, respectively, both films faced new competition from various genres, including a horror movie, an action feature starring Kerry Washington, a thriller with Josh Hartnett, and a Shakespeare-inspired musical. However, none of these newcomers significantly impacted the box office standings.

"Thunderbolts" secured the top position with an impressive $33.1 million from theaters in the U.S. and Canada, as reported by studio estimates on Sunday. This figure marked a 55% decline from its opening weekend. On the international front, the film added $34 million, escalating its global total to $272.2 million. With just two weekends in release, the Walt Disney Company production has already become the fourth highest-grossing film of the year both globally and domestically.

Comparatively, "Thunderbolts" has outperformed the previous Marvel installment, "Captain America: Brave New World," which suffered a significant 68% drop during its second weekend. The key factor for "Thunderbolts'" success appears to be positive reviews and word of mouth, which have bolstered its sustained performance. Paul Dergarabedian, a senior media analyst at Comscore, remarked, “The holding power of this film harkens back to the heyday of Marvel,” highlighting the importance of long-term playability over mere opening weekend figures.

Meanwhile, "Sinners" surpassed the $200 million mark in North American ticket sales this weekend, a remarkable achievement for an original R-rated film. It grossed an additional $21.1 million domestically and $6.6 million internationally, bringing its global total to $283.3 million. Due to popular demand, the film will return to 70mm IMAX screens next weekend, as confirmed by IMAX.

Warner Bros.' other significant release, the "Minecraft Movie," has grossed $409 million domestically and an impressive $909.6 million worldwide over its six weekends in theaters. This weekend, it added just under $8 million to its tally, securing third place, followed by "The Accountant 2" in fourth place with $6.1 million.

Several other newcomers entered wide release this weekend, but none made substantial headlines. Among them, "Clown in a Cornfield" emerged as the most successful, earning $3.7 million—a notable figure for its distributor, IFC, allowing it to break into the top five. Dergarabedian noted the typical lull experienced in the second weekend of May, suggesting that IFC had strategically chosen a perfect date for their horror offering.

Additionally, the Lionsgate action film "Shadow Force," featuring Kerry Washington and Omar Sy, generated $2 million from 2,170 screens. Vertical's "Fight or Flight," starring Josh Hartnett in a mercenary role, debuted with an estimated $2 million from 2,153 screens as well.

In limited release, the Tim Robinson and Paul Rudd movie "Friendship" launched on six screens in New York and Los Angeles, achieving the highest per-screen average of the year at $75,317, with numerous sellouts reported. A24 plans to expand the film's release nationwide by Memorial Day.

Overall, the weekend presented a quieter box office atmosphere. However, due to strong performances by "A Minecraft Movie," "Sinners," and "Thunderbolts," the year-to-date box office figures have increased approximately 16% compared to last year, according to Comscore data, although they remain down over 32% when compared to 2019 figures.

Looking ahead, the forthcoming release of "Final Destination: Bloodlines" is expected to rejuvenate the marketplace, paving the way for two major debuts over the upcoming holiday weekend: "Lilo & Stitch" and "Mission: Impossible – The Final Reckoning."

As per the final domestic figures scheduled for release on Monday, the ranking of the top 10 movies by domestic box office reflects the following:

  1. "Thunderbolts," $33.1 million.
  2. "Sinners," $21.1 million.
  3. "A Minecraft Movie," $8 million.
  4. "The Accountant 2," $6.1 million.
  5. "Clown in a Cornfield," $3.7 million.
  6. "Shadow Force," $2 million.
  7. "Fight or Flight," $2 million.
  8. "Until Dawn," $2 million.
  9. "The Amateur," $1.1 million.
  10. "The King of Kings," $680,656.
