NDP Calls for RCMP Probe into Alleged Blackmail Scandal

VICTORIA — The chair of British Columbia’s NDP caucus has written to the RCMP requesting an investigation into allegations that former members of the Opposition tried to blackmail ex-colleagues

In British Columbia, a significant political controversy has arisen involving allegations of blackmail aimed at former members of the Opposition. Stephanie Higginson, the chair of the NDP caucus, has formally requested an investigation by the Royal Canadian Mounted Police (RCMP) into these serious claims. The request comes in the wake of B.C. Conservative Leader John Rustad confirming the existence of a letter directed to his caucus, which warns of alleged blackmail activities involving three MLAs and their staff.

In her open letter to Deputy Commissioner Dwayne McDonald, Higginson emphasizes the pressing public interest in establishing the truth surrounding these allegations. She asserts that if any MLA or their staff members are engaged in acts of blackmail, it is vital for British Columbians to be informed, and those responsible should face prosecution. Her remarks highlight the importance of accountability and integrity within the political sphere.

On June 19, 2025, Rustad confirmed the authenticity of a communications piece he had shared with his caucus, where he referenced threats made by former colleagues, indicating they possessed “blackmail materials.” These materials reportedly include secretly recorded phone conversations and text messages that could have serious implications if released. Rustad has refrained from naming the individuals involved in these accusations but has ignited a firestorm of controversy with his statements.

A notable figure amidst these developments is Dallas Brodie, a former Conservative member who was expelled from the caucus earlier in 2025. Brodie has publicly dismissed Rustad's allegations, calling them “wild lies” related to her new political venture, One BC, which she co-founded with fellow ex-Conservative Tara Armstrong. This factional split within the party reflects ongoing tensions and divisions among Conservative members.

Jordan Kealy, another former member, mentioned that he has no knowledge of the allegations brought forth by Rustad, which raises questions about the veracity of the claims and the dynamics within the political party. The overall situation is exacerbated by the fact that NDP Premier David Eby has also called for the RCMP to be involved in investigating Rustad's serious allegations, further underscoring the gravity of the claims being made.

Armstrong responded through social media, asserting that both Rustad and Eby might throw accusations but insisted that the truth will ultimately come to light. This statement adds another layer to the ongoing debate, as it illustrates the rising tensions between the current political players and those who have recently parted ways with the Conservative party.

Higginson's communication, which was also sent to Rustad, reinforces the need for transparency and thorough investigation into these alarming accusations. As the story develops, all eyes remain on the RCMP to determine whether an official inquiry will take place and what consequences may unfold for those involved in the allegations of blackmail.
