The jersey was presented by Cardinal Blase Cupich, the archbishop of Chicago, during a pre-game ceremony on July 12, 2025, before the White Sox faced off against the Cleveland Guardians.

The custom jersey featured Konerko's last name along with "Pope Leo" placed above the No. 14, reflective of both figures linked by the number. After receiving the unique gift, Konerko expressed his amazement at the gesture, stating, "It's kind of surreal." He humorously added that his mother would likely request to keep the jersey, highlighting the personal significance of the gift.

Konerko also indicated his intention to send a signed jersey back to Pope Leo, expressing a mix of excitement and humility regarding the gesture. Pope Leo XIV, previously known as Robert Prevost, made history on May 8, 2025, by becoming the first pope from the United States in the Catholic Church's long history. Born in Chicago, the new pontiff is a known White Sox enthusiast, having attended the opening game of the 2005 World Series against the Houston Astros. He witnessed the White Sox claim a 5-3 victory at U.S. Cellular Field, leading to a four-game sweep and earning the team's first championship title since 1917.
