ISLAMABAD (AP) – Saudi Arabia has conferred its highest national accolade, the King Abdulaziz Medal of the Excellent Class, upon Pakistan's army chief, Field Marshal Asim Munir, during his official visit to Riyadh. This recognition underscores the strengthening ties between Pakistan and Saudi Arabia, particularly in areas such as counterterrorism collaboration.
Field Marshal Munir received the prestigious medal on Sunday, in the wake of a defense agreement signed by Saudi Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman and Pakistani Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif earlier in the year. This pact emphasizes the long-standing strategic partnership that has long existed between the two nations, focusing on mutual security interests.
In a notable statement from September, Pakistan's Defense Minister Khawaja Mohammad Asif indicated that the country's nuclear capabilities would be accessible to Saudi Arabia if deemed necessary, as part of the newly established defense agreement.
Munir's visit to Saudi Arabia marks his first diplomatic journey following his promotion to the newly created position of chief of defense forces in Pakistan. This role aims to enhance cooperation among the Pakistan Army, Navy, and Air Force, reflecting a comprehensive approach to national defense.
For decades, Saudi Arabia has fostered robust economic, religious, and security ties with Pakistan. These ties have allowed for collaboration on multiple fronts, including military and defense initiatives, as well as economic support, especially during periods of financial strain for Pakistan.
Earlier this year, Munir gained prominence after Pakistan successfully countered India in a four-day border clash. This conflict arose from an Indian military operation targeting militants believed to be linked to the killing of 26 tourists in India-administered Kashmir. The ensuing escalation saw both nuclear-armed nations exchanging attacks until a ceasefire was negotiated with the intervention of then-U.S. President Donald Trump.
Pakistan's military noted that awarding the medal to Munir signifies the depth of bilateral relations and the collective resolve of both nations to enhance strategic cooperation for regional and global peace. The honor is acknowledgment of Munir's military service, leadership, and efforts to strengthen defense cooperation and institutional ties between the two countries.
During discussions held with Saudi officials, regional security and evolving geopolitical challenges took center stage. Both parties reaffirmed their historic and brotherly relations, highlighting the mutual commitment to one another's security and stability.
Saudi leadership recognized Munir's professionalism and strategic vision, while Munir expressed his gratitude for the honor, deeming it a representation of the enduring ties between Pakistan and Saudi Arabia. He reiterated Pakistan's commitment to ensuring the security, stability, and prosperity of the Kingdom.
Moreover, the longstanding defense relationship between Pakistan and Saudi Arabia is partly rooted in Islamabad's commitment to safeguarding the Islamic holy sites of Mecca and Medina. In addition, Saudi Arabia has played a vital role in financially assisting Pakistan during instances of default on foreign debt payments, fostering an atmosphere of mutual support and cooperation.
