The incident took place during the restart of the facility following a maintenance period, as confirmed by Mol Group, the company that owns the plant.

Hungarian Prime Minister Péter Magyar provided details in a social media post, indicating that seven people sustained burn injuries from the blast. In response to the emergency, five helicopters were deployed to transport the injured to medical facilities in nearby cities, namely Miskolc and Debrecen. Economy and Energy Minister István Kapitány confirmed this action in a separate update, adding that a disaster response mobile laboratory did not find any hazardous materials exceeding safe threshold limits in the vicinity.

Both Minister Kapitány and Mol Group CEO Zsolt Hernádi are currently en route to the explosion site to oversee the situation and assess the damage firsthand. In his Facebook message, Prime Minister Magyar extended heartfelt condolences to the family of the deceased and expressed wishes for a swift recovery for those injured in the incident.

A spokesperson from the regional disaster management authority provided additional information to the state news agency MTI, indicating that the fire ignited by the explosion has since been extinguished. Dávid Dojcsák mentioned that cleanup operations are ongoing, with emergency units actively securing the area to prevent further incidents.

This incident highlights the inherent risks associated with petrochemical facilities, particularly during maintenance and operational transitions.
