"Dateline Canada: Unsolved Mysteries Come to Life"

Citytv is bringing the internationally known Dateline franchise to Canada for the first time with a new investigative news special focused on one of the country’s most enduring unsolved cases

Citytv is set to introduce the internationally renowned Dateline franchise to Canada for the first time with an investigative news special highlighting one of the country’s most persistent unsolved cases. This new program, titled Dateline Canada, will premiere on November 26 at 8 p.m. ET/PT, marking a significant step as the first international expansion of NBC's long-established Dateline newsmagazine.

The inaugural episode will center around the disappearance of Elizabeth Bain, a University of Toronto student who mysteriously vanished in Scarborough in 1990. Over three decades later, this case is still recognized as one of Canada's most notable unsolved mysteries, capturing the attention of the media and the public alike.

Diana Swain, an award-winning journalist, will lead the special, aiming to revisit the events surrounding Bain's disappearance. "I’m proud to bring this story to Canadian audiences," Swain stated. She expressed confidence that Dateline Canada would allow for a thorough re-examination of this complicated case, connecting overlooked details and providing viewers with a deeper comprehension of the narrative that has unfolded over the years.

The special is set to delve into various aspects of the Bain case. This includes examining the wrongful conviction of Robert Baltovich, who was previously accused of her murder. In 2000, Baltovich was convicted of second-degree murder; however, this conviction was later overturned. Consequently, prosecutors opted not to pursue a retrial, leaving Bain's disappearance unresolved. The investigative program will also consider recent reviews of existing evidence and new information that has emerged through detailed examinations of police records.

Longtime NBC correspondent Keith Morrison remarked on the franchise's evolution, stating, "For more than three decades, Dateline has been telling stories that resonate with audiences. To see the franchise expand with Diana Swain leading the new Canadian edition is an exciting evolution for the broadcast." Morrison's enthusiasm underscores the significance of this new installment in the Dateline legacy.

As anticipation builds for the premiere of Dateline Canada, viewers are eager to see how Diana Swain and her team will navigate the complexities of Elizabeth Bain's disappearance. The show's airing on both Citytv and Citytv+ underscores its potential to engage a broad audience across Canada, providing insights into one of the nation's most enduring unsolved cases.
