Endangered Right Whale Entangled Again in St. Lawrence

HALIFAX — A young North Atlantic right whale, classified as endangered, has been sighted entangled in fishing gear in the Gulf of St. Lawrence for the second time within the same week. The young male whale, estimated to be about five years old, was initially observed on Monday, June 12, 2026, off the coast of Shippagan, New Brunswick. It was spotted again on Wednesday in the waters near the Iles-de-la-Madeleine, situated on the west side of Quebec.

According to Brett Gilchrist, a spokesman for the Fisheries Department, attempts were made by fishery officers to attach a satellite tracking device to the fishing gear that was trailing behind the whale. Unfortunately, these efforts were unsuccessful due to poor weather conditions that hindered their operations. The team was prepared to work swiftly to monitor and eventually assist the whale, but the inclement weather posed significant challenges.

Gilchrist indicated that, should weather and sea conditions improve, a marine mammal rescue team is prepared to make another attempt to remove the fishing gear that has ensnared the whale. The North Atlantic right whale population is critically low, with estimates indicating that fewer than 400 individuals remain. However, there has been a gradual increase in their numbers since 2020, reflecting ongoing conservation efforts aimed at protecting this rare species.

The North Atlantic right whale is known for its massive size and distinctively large heads, making it one of the most easily recognizable whale species. Despite being on the brink of extinction, ongoing conservation initiatives, combined with increased public awareness, have contributed to a slow recovery in recent years. The continued survival of these whales is contingent upon effective management of their habitat and the mitigation of threats such as entanglement in fishing gear.

This situation underscores the ongoing challenges faced by marine wildlife in preserving their natural habitats against human activities. The entanglement of marine mammals in fishing gear remains a significant concern for wildlife advocates and conservationists working towards the protection of endangered species like the North Atlantic right whale.
