BUCHAREST, Romania (AP) — Romanian President Nicusor Dan has nominated Adrian Vestea, a seasoned politician from Brasov County, to take on the role of prime minister in a bid to alleviate the ongoing political crisis. This announcement comes after Dan's first nominee, Eugen Tomac, withdrew his nomination due to a lack of political support, failing to present a cabinet to Parliament within the stipulated timeframe of 10 days.
Adrian Vestea, aged 53 and a dedicated member of the National Liberal Party, steps into the spotlight as Dan's second nomination this month. Dan made the announcement at the presidential Cotroceni Palace in Bucharest, emphasizing the need for a capable leader to navigate through the current political uncertainties. The presidential nomination will require approval from lawmakers before Vestea can officially assume the position.
During the announcement, President Dan praised Vestea's extensive experience in various public administration roles, highlighting his tenure as mayor of a small town and as the president of the Brasov county council. Dan expressed confidence in Vestea's abilities, noting his successful track record in attracting European funding for development projects. He described Vestea as “a categorically pro-Western person” with a wealth of experience in managing budgets.
In his own statement, Vestea, who previously served as the development minister from 2023 to 2024, expressed his commitment to establishing a political government aimed at implementing genuine reforms while maintaining Romania's pro-Western trajectory. He underlined the importance of development for Romania, stating, “We are the sixth largest country in Europe, and we need to put a major emphasis on development,” pledging to pursue this goal from his first day in office.
Dan's two recent nominations for the prime ministerial position are a response to the political instability that arose following a no-confidence vote that resulted in the ousting of Prime Minister Ilie Bolojan in May. Notably, a general election in Romania is not expected until 2028, which intensifies the urgency for a stable leadership to navigate through economic challenges.
Romania is currently grappling with one of the highest budget deficits in the European Union, coupled with rampant inflation and a technical recession. Since the coalition came to power in June 2025, reducing the budget deficit has been a key focus. However, Bolojan's time in office was marked by difficulties, as he aimed to address one of the country’s most severe political crises in its post-communist history, but his tenure lasted less than a year.
