BANGKOK (AP) — Australian police announced on Monday that a Thai airline employee faced arrest and charges for allegedly importing over 1 kilogram (2.2 pounds) of heroin into Melbourne. The 26-year-old woman was reportedly on duty during an international flight when she arrived at Melbourne Airport on Thursday.
Authorities reported that she raised suspicions during a baggage screening at the airport, leading to her arrest. The Australian Federal Police revealed in a statement on their website that an X-ray examination and further tests discovered white powder hidden in the linings of her 12 tote bags. Initial tests indicated that the substance was heroin, with a street value estimated around 500,000 Australian dollars (approximately $345,000).
The woman is charged with both importing and possessing the controlled substance, which carries a maximum penalty of 25 years in prison. The police stated that she is scheduled to appear in a Melbourne court in September, where the legal proceedings regarding her case will take place.
