"Reporter Rescues Man from River: A Life Saved"

A CityNews Calgary reporter is being credited with helping save a man’s life after pulling him from a river on Sunday

A CityNews Calgary reporter named Phoenix Phillips is being hailed as a hero after playing a crucial role in saving a man's life from the Bow River on Sunday. While enjoying an afternoon with his wife at Harvie Passage, Phillips was alerted by a woman's frantic shout that there was “a body in the water.” Acting swiftly, he leveraged his experience as a former lifeguard and rushed toward the river.

Upon seeing the situation, Phillips turned to his wife and said, “here we go,” demonstrating his determination to respond. He, along with several bystanders, collaborated to bring the man safely to shore. Once on dry land, Phillips initiated mouth-to-mouth resuscitation while another good Samaritan performed chest compressions. Together, they worked tirelessly for approximately fifteen minutes, focused solely on giving the man “a fighting chance.”

Emergency Medical Services (EMS) later confirmed that the victim was transported to a local hospital in life-threatening condition. Phillips estimated that nearly a dozen people contributed in various ways during the rescue, whether it was providing medical assistance, helping emergency crews, or managing the growing crowd of onlookers.

After the incident, Phillips had a brief interaction with the attending physician, who was able to convey some good news: “Phoenix, he has a pulse and you guys saved him,” the physician reportedly said. This statement underscored the effectiveness of the group's efforts during the critical moments following the rescue.

Despite the intense experience, Phillips incurred only minor scrapes while protecting the man's head from striking a rock during the rescue operation. The ordeal has left a lasting impression on him, leading him to express the hope that this experience will inspire others to learn first aid. He emphasized the importance of being able to assist someone in need, stating, “If you can help somebody, you change somebody’s life… maybe even keep somebody’s life.”

As of the time of broadcasting, Alberta Health Services had not released any updates regarding the condition of the man who had been rescued. The quick actions and teamwork displayed by Phillips and the other bystanders highlight the significance of readiness and the potential impact of basic life-saving skills.
