Elmer MacKay first entered the political arena in 1971 when he was elected as a member of the federal Progressive Conservatives. His commitment to the party remained steadfast until his last day in office in 1993.

In a pivotal move in 1983, Elmer MacKay chose to vacate his seat in order to enable the new Progressive Conservative leader, Brian Mulroney, to contest a byelection. Following this, MacKay returned to the political forefront, being re-elected in 1984. During his tenure, he held several significant cabinet positions under Prime Minister Mulroney's administration, including roles as Minister of National Revenue and Minister of Public Works.

Before venturing into politics, Elmer MacKay was a practicing lawyer, a foundation that likely contributed to his effectiveness in public service. His dedication to his constituents did not go unnoticed; in a recent social media tribute, Nova Scotia Premier Tim Houston paid homage to MacKay’s enduring commitment to the community.
